Group Coaching or Action Learning involves teaming up executives to solve work problems so that they can share experiences across the organizational structure or work functions and learn from collaborative problem solving as a leader. This allows each participant to develop their capabilities through exposure to other functions without having to rotate job roles.
The Process:
- Define a company or workgroup need where the solution would provide obvious benefit to the organization.
- The individual participants included in the process are either from different parts of the organization who are engaged in this development process (e.g. HiPo’s) or an intact team.
- These individuals are identified for leadership development and/or cross-functional exposure.
- They each bring special skills to the process that can benefit the solution process.
- Experimentation is welcome and individuals are encouraged to be creative in obtaining solutions.
- While this is an individual development process, it also includes the goal of making the team a cohesive unit that works well together.
- The development for leaders includes building individual competence and organizational bench strength without having to remove individuals from their jobs for a long period of time.
- The team will be encouraged to invite subject matter experts from outside the group who can provide technical and specialized assistance to the problem-solving process. This creates additional exposure of this group into the organization.
- Builds on the way adults tend to learn which is action oriented and problem-solving oriented – its’ real time!
- Always an extremely flexible approach.
The Use of Active Reflection:
- Individuals will be encouraged through this process to have active reflection on their own behavior and the dynamics of team. This will be done through log entries throughout the process of the team meetings and in between sessions through personal journaling.
- Coaches will be working with individuals tying this process to the individual coaching process that is occurring. Those who do not have full time executive coaching engagements will receive a modified process.
- Pre-session assessment is done to help individuals grow in self-awareness as they enter into this process.
